How to use your Menstrual Disc? Step by step guide

Menstrual Disc Video Tutorial

How to insert your menstrual disc ?

Before Using Your Menstrual Disc

Before inserting or removing your menstrual disc, always make sure to wash your hands thoroughly to avoid transferring any bacteria.

If you're using a reusable menstrual disc, rinse it with water before use and sterilize it at least once per cycle.
👉 Check out our care guide for more tips on cleaning your reusable disc.

For disposable menstrual discs, they come pre-sterilized and ready to use, so no rinsing is necessary before insertion.

Step 1: Get in position

To make insertion easier and more comfortable, we recommend sitting on the toilet with your legs slightly elevated, or squatting in the shower. Choose whatever feels most natural to you.

Step 2: Pinch the disc

Gently pinch the sides of the disc together to make it easier to insert.
Once folded, it should resemble a figure 8, as slim as a tampon and ready to go.

Step 3: Insert the Disc into Your Body

  • If you're using a disc with a pull tab or ring: Insert it with the tab facing forward. The back edge (with the ring) should go in first so that the tab remains closer to the vaginal opening for easy removal.

  • If you're using a disposable disc:
There’s no front or back, just fold and insert.

Gently push the disc all the way back and downward toward your tailbone, so it slides underneath your cervix.

Step 4: Position the vaginal disc

Once the back of the disc is in place under your cervix, tuck the front edge behind your pubic bone. This will keep the disc securely in place and prevent leaks.

Having leaks during your first few tries?
Make sure the disc is tucked properly behind your pubic bone and fully covering your cervix.

Insert a Menstrual Disc Using the OmyDisc Applicator

Here are the steps to easily insert your menstrual disc with the applicator:

  1. Pinch the disc so it forms a figure 8 shape.

  2. Slide the folded disc into the applicator tube.

  3. Insert the plunger into the back of the tube, you’re now ready to insert.

  4. Place the applicator at the entrance of your vagina, angled slightly downward.

  5. Gently press the plunger to release the disc into your body.

  6. Make sure the disc is tucked properly behind your pubic bone and that’s it! 😊

How to Remove Your Menstrual Disc

    When should you remove it?

You can wear a menstrual disc for up to 12 hours thanks to its large capacity.
However, to reduce the (very low) risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), we recommend changing it every 6 to 8 hours.

    Step 1: Get into position

Just like insertion, it’s easiest to remove the disc while seated on the toilet with your legs slightly elevated, or squatting in the shower.

    Step 2: Auto-dump before removal

To avoid messy hands, we recommend using the auto-dump method before removing your disc.
Contract your pelvic floor muscles (as if you were having a bowel movement). This will release the menstrual flow.

💡 Tip: Keep your muscles slightly contracted once the disc empties, it’ll be easier to reach and remove it.

Step 3: Grab and remove the disc

If your disc has a ring or pull tab:

    • Use your finger to hook the ring or tab.
    • Gently pull the disc out, keeping it horizontal to avoid spills.

If your disc doesn’t have a ring:

    • Slide your finger into the vaginal canal until you feel the disc.
    • Hook your finger under or over the rim.
    • Pull the disc out, angling it toward the vaginal opening.

      Step 4: Empty and clean

Once removed, you can dump the contents in the toilet or shower drain.

      • If you’re using a disposable disc, simply toss it in the trash and insert a new one.
      • If you’re using a reusable disc, rinse it and reinsert or sterilize it if needed.

If you want an easy way to sterilize your menstrual disc, we recommend using a sterilizer. ✅
