What to do if your menstrual disc is leaking?

Leaks during the first few uses happen quite often.
This is normal, you are testing a new protection, the menstrual disc is not always easy to put in and you may not have the right size of menstrual disc either.

We advise you to first try using the menstrual disc again by carefully rereading the instructions and checking:

  • That it is well under your cervix .
  • Having the front of the disc stuck behind your pubic bone .

If, despite this, the menstrual disc continues to leak, it is likely that it is a size problem .

Here are the 4 causes of leaks with the menstrual disc and our advice to resolve them.

Is your menstrual disc slipping out or won't stay in place?

The causes of these leaks

If your menstrual disc is:

  • Unhooks and ends up in your vaginal canal.
  • Or that it empties every time you sneeze , cough , laugh , when you squat, after the slightest physical effort.
  • Or you have leaks after just a few hours of use.

It is very likely that you have the wrong size menstrual disc .

This is a very common problem when first using the menstrual disc, because it is often difficult to know which size to choose and former users of the menstrual cup often take the same size as their old period cup, which is not always a good thing.

Here's what happens when you have the wrong disk size:

  • If you have a size that is too small : the protection will not be properly held behind your pubic bone and will slip at the slightest movement in your vaginal canal.
  • If your protection is too big : the menstrual disc will be compressed inside your body and will act like a spring trying to escape .

Our tips to avoid these leaks

To avoid ending up with the wrong size menstrual disc, we recommend that you measure the height of your cervix carefully to ensure you choose the right size.

Or a better solution would be to be able to test several sizes of menstrual discs . This is what we offer at OmyDisc with our offer: 2 menstrual discs for the price of 1. 👈
So you can test the menstrual disc size S and M and see which one is the most suitable for you.

Your period disc leaks instantly and does not catch blood

The cause of these leaks

If, every time you put on your protection:

  • You have leaks instantly , or even very quickly (30 min to 1 hour) after putting it on.
  • Or you have continuous leaks and feel like the disk is not working.
  • Or that when you remove your menstrual protection, it is completely empty.

In this case, the main reason could be a positioning problem.

It may be that your menstrual disc is simply not positioned under your cervix, but in front of or next to your cervix.

So the blood would be flowing next to your protection, which would explain why it is completely empty.

Our advice for positioning it correctly

To position it properly under your cervix, the trick is to tilt it downwards when you insert your menstrual disc. This will make it easier to pass under your cervix.
Then lock the front of the period disk behind your pubic bone.

To be sure that you have positioned it correctly, you can check by passing your finger under the disc and try to feel your cervix. If with the membrane of the disc you feel your cervix, it means that the protection is in place.

Special case with tilted cervix and menstrual disc

Normally, if you have a retroverted uterus, you can still use this new menstrual protection .

However, in some cases, the cervix is rotated toward the back of your vagina or is actually stuck to your vaginal wall, which is very rare.
But in this case, using the menstrual disc can be complicated .

Do you have a very heavy flow and your menstrual disc is leaking?

Causes of leaks with heavy flow

If you have a very heavy flow, even hemorrhagic, and after a few hours of use, your menstrual disc leaks. It is possible that it is completely full and is starting to overflow.

However, the disc is the shield that can collect the most menstrual blood, so if it starts to overflow too quickly , then it is more likely either a size problem or a positioning problem.

How to prevent your menstrual disc from overflowing?

To avoid having to change your menstrual disc every 3 hours without having to wait for it to overflow, the best solution is to self-empty it , which consists of emptying it without having to remove it.

Here are the steps to empty it automatically:

  1. Sit on the toilet with your legs slightly raised.
  2. Contract your perineum (as if you were pushing for the big commission).
  3. The disc should tilt and wick blood away from your pad.
  4. Once finished, release your perineum and the disc should fall back into place on its own.

Your protection is now almost empty, so you can keep it on for a few more hours.

Be careful, however, not to exceed the maximum 8 to 12 hours with your protection, even if you empty it several times.

Your period disc empties when you pee

If your menstrual disc only leaks when you are on the toilet and the rest of the time you have no leaks, rest assured, your menstrual disc is not leaking, it empties itself.

In the previous section on "How to prevent your menstrual disc from overflowing?" we explained how to use it.

But to put it simply, when you are in a sitting or squatting position and you contract your pelvic floor , as is often the case when going to the bathroom. Your menstrual disc will move slightly and allow blood to flow out of your body.

But if this phenomenon only occurs in the toilet , then don't worry . You can use your menstrual disc normally.

If you have leaks and still don't know where your problem is coming from, you can contact our team on the Contact page who will be happy to answer your questions.
