What to Do If Your Menstrual Disc Is Leaking?

Leaks during your first few uses are actually pretty common.

That’s totally normal, you’re trying out a new type of protection, and menstrual discs can take a little practice to get right. You may also not be using the right size yet.

We recommend starting by trying again with your disc and carefully reviewing the instructions. Make sure:

  • The disc is fully inserted under your cervix ✅
  • The front of the disc is tucked behind your pubic bone to hold it in place. ✅

If it still leaks even after that, it’s likely a size issue.

👉 Here are the 4 most common reasons for leaks with menstrual discs and what you can do to fix them.

Your Menstrual Disc Slips or Won’t Stay in Place

Why this happens:

If your menstrual disc:

  • Slips down into your vaginal canal
  • Empties every time you sneeze, cough, laugh, squat, or move
  • Starts leaking just a few hours after insertion

👉 Then chances are you’re not using the right size.

This is super common, especially when you’re just starting out with menstrual discs. It can be hard to figure out your size, especially if you’ve used a menstrual cup before and assume the same size will work for your disc (it often doesn’t!).

Here’s what happens when the disc is the wrong size:

  • Too small: The disc won’t stay tucked behind your pubic bone and will slide down into your vaginal canal with even the slightest movement.
  • Too large: The disc will feel compressed inside your body and act like a spring, popping out of place or making you feel constant pressure.

    How to fix it:

    • Measure your cervix height to determine the right size
    • Or try 2 different sizes to see what works best for your body

That’s why we created the OmyDisc Duo Pack:
2 different disc sizes (S + M) for the price of one, so you can test both and find your perfect fit.

Your Menstrual Disc Leaks Instantly and Comes Out Empty

    Why this is happening

If every time you insert your disc:

    • You have leaks almost immediately (within 30 minutes to 1 hour)
    • You’re constantly leaking and feel like the disc just isn’t working.
    • You remove the disc and it’s completely empty

👉 The most likely cause is incorrect positioning.

Your menstrual disc may not be sitting under your cervix, but instead to the side or in front of it.
That means your flow is bypassing the disc entirely, causing leaks and leaving the disc empty.

    How to fix the positioning

    When inserting your disc:

    1. Angle it downward to help it slide under your cervix more easily

    2. Once fully in, tuck the front rim behind your pubic bone to keep it in place

Want to double-check? After inserting, run your finger under the disc if you can feel your cervix through the membrane, you’re good to go! 🙌

    Special case: Retroverted uterus

If you have a retroverted uterus, you can usually still use a menstrual disc.

But in rare cases, the cervix tilts so far back (or lies flat against the back wall of the vagina) that proper disc placement becomes tricky or even impossible.
If that’s the case, a disc might not work for you!

Heavy Flow and Your Menstrual Disc Is Leaking?

Why Leaks Happen with Heavy Flows 🩸

If you have a very heavy or even hemorrhagic flow and your menstrual disc starts leaking after just a few hours, it might simply be overflowing.

While discs can hold more than cups or tampons, if you're soaking through quickly, it could also be due to:

    • Wrong size (disc isn’t staying in place properly)

    • Incorrect placement (not tucked under the cervix or pubic bone)

How to Prevent Overflow (Without Constantly Removing the Disc)

Instead of taking your disc out every 3 hours, try auto-dumping an easy way to empty the disc without removing it.

    Here’s how:

    1. Sit on the toilet with your knees slightly raised

    2. Contract your pelvic floor muscles (as if you’re pushing to poop)

    3. The disc should tilt just enough to release some menstrual fluid

    4. Relax your muscles, the disc will slide back into place automatically

Your disc is now nearly empty and can last you a few more hours!

⚠️ Important: Even if you auto-dump, never wear your disc longer than 8–12 hours total to avoid any risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

Your Menstrual Disc Leaks When You Pee?

If your menstrual disc only leaks when you're on the toilet but doesn’t leak at any other time, don’t worry, your disc isn’t malfunctioning, it’s just auto-dumping.

As explained earlier in the section “How to stop your disc from overflowing”, this is a normal phenomenon.

    Why is this happening?

When you sit or squat on the toilet and contract your pelvic floor muscles (which naturally happens when you pee or poop), your disc shifts slightly, allowing some menstrual fluid to flow out. 🩸

This is called auto-dumping, and it’s a feature not a flaw!

    Should You Be Concerned?

If leaks happen only while you’re on the toilet and not during your normal daily activities, then your disc is working perfectly fine. ✅
You can keep using it with confidence!
